Moving to Umbria

Why Umbria? You must be curious about that. And is Umbria beautiful? What is there to do in Umbria? Is life there expensive? What is the climate like in Umbria? Read on and find out! This is what makes Umbria unique. Umbria, “the land of Francis of Assisi” (this Roman Catholic saint spent most of his life there), is perhaps the most attractive part of Italy to live in. And for more than one reason. Here are the main ones:

  • Ancient history – The Umbria region gets its name from the Umbri, a tribe of people who settled in the area several centuries before Christ. During the Etruscan-Roman era and the Middle Ages, the area flourished; the towns grew into principalities. The traces of this ancient history can be seen in its culture, art and architecture, among other things.
  • Special sights – Sights, Umbria has many and special ones too. To name a few… The Pozzo di San Patrizio, a well no less than sixty-three meters deep. The Marmore waterfall. The colorful Monti Sibillini National Park. The Cathedral of Orvieto. The Basilica of St. Francis. The underground world of Narni. The steep streets in Gubbio. And you name it!
  • Umbrian cuisine – In Umbria people like to serve their own regional dishes, because they have a delicious cuisine. With the most famous culinary product being the truffle. But there is more deliciousness. How about the handmade pastas bigole and strangozzi, for example? Or minestra di farro: a soup with spelt, onion, tomato, celery and pecorino cheese. Pesciolini fritti, which are fried fish, are also delicious. As are lenticchie (green lentils) and pane casereccio, a rolled, stuffed bread.
  • Hospitality – Of all the regions in Italy, Umbria has been declared the most hospitable. And not surprisingly! The people there are very warm and give everyone a friendly welcome.
  • Green Heart – The soil in Umbria is fertile and it is made the most of. You will find rolling hills with vineyards and olive groves, as well as fields of wheat. Sugar beets are grown, tobacco and sunflowers. The region is also called “the green heart of Italy.
  • Own wines – Viticulture has been taking place in Umbria for centuries, and the wines that come from it are therefore made according to ancient tradition and of high quality. The best Umbrian wines? Those are the white Orvieto wine and the reds Torgiano and Montefalco. But feel free to try any of the other regional wines as well.
  • Mediterranean weather – Most of Umbria has a mild Mediterranean climate, equivalent to hot, dry summers and mild to cold winters with the necessary rain, and spring and fall are in between in terms of weather and temperature.
