What makes Puglia so special? There are several reasons for that. You are probably wondering several things. Is Puglia worth visiting and which towns should I visit? What is the most beautiful part of this region? What is there to do? Puglia, also known as “Puglia,” is one of the most beautiful regions of Italy. We would like to tell you why.

• Extraordinary houses – In Puglia, such as in the monumental town of Alberello, you will find so-called trulli. These picturesque limestone houses are characterized by their cone-shaped roofs, which are sometimes decorated with (religious) symbols. Pictures to see!
• Longest coastline – Of all Italian regions, Puglia has the longest coastline. And that means: many beautiful beaches, such as the Torre dell’Orso beach, where you can sunbathe and enjoy sun, sea and sand to your heart’s content. What more could you want?
• Tasty cuisine – Unlike many regions in Italy, the simple but delicious cuisine consists mainly of fish, meat, vegetable and bread dishes. Specialties include: cime di rapa, Italian turnip greens; caciocavallo, a hard cheese with mild flavor; pasticciotto, a delectable shortbread pastry; and tiella, a dish of mussels, rice, vegetables and cheese.
• Sunny climate – Warm summers, mild winters, little precipitation. This is the weather you will encounter in Puglia, as a result of the Mediterranean climate. A wonderful environment for sun lovers, in other words!
• Olives – Wherever you go in Puglia, you cannot avoid the olive trees. In fact, this region is Italy’s number one olive producer. And tasty olive oil if they make from it! If you are there, you should definitely try bread with freshly pressed olive oil.
• Unique sights – Puglia may not be known for its sights, but there are some. Very unique even! Think Castel del Monte; Lecce with its baroque churches; Ostuni, the white town and the cathedral of Otranto. All worth seeing.
• Mountainous peninsula – Puglia is mostly flat, but there is an exception. The Gargano Peninsula, which is surrounded by the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea. There you will encounter mountains, steep cliffs, limestone cliffs, lakes and forests. Not to mention idyllic towns like Vieste, Peschici and Rodi Garganico. So beautiful there!
• Important wine region – In the south of Puglia you will find a lot of viticulture. In fact, it is one of the most important wine regions. A number of famous wines come from here, including the negroamaro and primitivo. These spicy dark wines taste exquisite!
• Cultural history – The history of Puglia is one that features many peoples and civilizations, as the region was a crossroads and they all converged there. As a result, you will find traces and art treasures of Greeks, Romans, Lombards, Angevins, Aragonese, Byzantines, Normans and more.
